Works For Me - Cutting the Cord

Photobucket

For months, I have talked to my husband about cutting out the cable. He loves his golf channel and hunting channels though. He is the only one that usually watched it. Since he wanted it though, I said ok.

Sure, I would watch the Food Network, but that is because we have it. I haven't sat down and watched it in a while though. I was also tired of the horrible things that were on tv that my children had to flip through.

Well, I finally convinced him at least for a little while to cut the cable down to basic. I told him how much it would save us, and he was flabbergasted. It was kinda funny because when I tried to call the cable company the gal and told her I wanted basic cable. She was like "You don't want to do that." I'm like "Yes, I do. We don't watch hardly any tv." She said well you won't get this or that. "We don't use those." I was a little intimidated and ended up saying I would think about it. She told me to just return the box to the store then said "Can I interest you in our phone plan?" "Uh, no, thank you!"

I got off the phone and figured out how to unplug it and took it back. They didn't give me any sales tactics at the store and were very helpful.

So do you want to hear how much it will save us?! $65 a month or $770 a year! WOW!

Have you cut your cable?

That is a lot! Satelitte TV is actually something that we use so, we cut back on cell phones instead. We pay $60 for 3 phones every 3 months. And we never use the minutes. We really do just use our phones for emergencies:-)

10 years and counting! No TV period! LOVE IT! We rent movies through Netflix and once in a while will get a TV series, if my parents say it's good and worth the time. We watch it at our leisure!

We recently did that, too. And cut all un-necessities on our phone (caller ID, call waiting, etc) and saved over $35 a month!!! I feel like a car insurance commercial when I say that I saved over $375 a year!!!

We get cable because it's included in our rent or I wouldn't have it.

No cable for us. Bless my hubby for surviving football season without it, but other than that... we're good!

We cut ours a few months ago and we only had a few days of 'the shakes.' :) Honestly, it's not that bad. It turns out that our family room TV is so broken that we couldn't use a converter box with it. So, now we only have TV in one room of the house (master bedroom) and we're ok with that! We don't think we're going to replace the TV downstairs either. It's good for us to not have TV.

My husband wants to cut our cable to but I told him he had to wait for True Blood to be over. xD

Well, here's my story....Back in the spring, we also decided to cut cable down to the very basic - just the major channels like ABC, CBS, NBC. Two different guys came out to work on it, but because of some connection outside, they weren't able to remove all the extra channels. They still cut our cost down to the basic price but we still get most of the channels we did previously.

Thankfully the tv is rarely on during the day and we do make a concerted effort to read and do other things as opposed to watching tv at night.

5 years with basic cable only, and I don't miss all those channels! Especially now that "The Daily Show" is available online so I can watch it when I get a hankering--which is not daily.

But the thing that really helped us cut back on TV was having a baby. Since children under 2 are not supposed to watch TV at all, we couldn't have the TV on when he was awake...and when he was asleep, we usually had other things to do! Now we're trying to set a good example for him by not watching too much TV.
